"Cloud World" (working title) is an in-progress album project in collaboration with Pittsburgh-based artist Bun Bun Shop (Maggie Acker) inspired by a conversation we had over the summer of 2019 while watching an amazing sunset beneath huge, fluffy thunderheads (complete with rainbow). I recounted a recurring dream I would have as a kid about climbing a ladder out my bedroom window that led to a huge, mythic cloud city and the rest just fell into place. A stylistic change of pace for me, the album draws its shape from Japanese City Pop, Vaporwave and Lo-fi material orbiting the basic DNA of my typical output.
The Home of the Headhunter is a collaboration with graphic artist Michael Koehler inspired by our nostalgia for the fantasy cassette tape/story books of the 1980s. The physical package includes a 30 page storybook co-written by the artist and myself and illustrated masterfully by Koehler. It is accompanied by a brooding soundtrack on cassette, which guides the listener on an adventure through the fantastic world of Koehler's artwork.
The Magi is a collaboration with graphic artist Joel Heires that started with the cover image called "Initiation." A long time fan of high fantasy art (the likes of Frank Frazetta, Gerald Brom, Moebius, Katsuhiro Otomo, H. R. Giger, etc.) I was immediately struck by the ominous and austere energy in Joel's piece, and composed the first track immediately, using only my Moog Mother32, my guitar and a tambourine. Joel and I subsequently resolved to create a suite of seven works, a kind of soundtrack album to accompany his series of fantasy pin-ups.
